Term 3, Week 9

Room 14 were very lucky to have a new student Matias join the class this week. Welcome to Tawa school.
On Monday the students continued developing their water confidence through exploration and creating games at the pool.
On Wednesday Room 14 celebrated international Talk Like a Pirate day. Activities for the day included walking the plank, climbing the rigging, digging for gold, creating treasure maps and playing captains coming.

On Thursday afternoon during Expo the students were set a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) activity. The problem they had was to build a bridge that could support a toy car over a piece of blue A3 paper (landscape). The session started off with all the available equipment being placed on the mat, this included ice block sticks, straws, wooden blocks, tin cans, pipe cleaners, a variety of tape. The students then worked in groups or individuals to problem solve and construct their bridge. They first selected the equipment they thought would be best for their construction. This took lots of testing, problem solving and collaborating ideas. All students persisted throughout the session and completed a successful bridge.
For Friday Arts this morning we began working with clay. We used our fine motor skills to make balls, snakes and coils. We then used these shapes to make both tāonga designs and pinch pots. It was quite a new experience to use clay and the children enjoyed exploring new textures.
As it was the final PMP session for the term the amazing Rachel Millar made a special safari themed PMP course for the students to go through.
