Term 3, Week 7

Happy Birthday Casey who turned five years old this week.
Another fun week at the pool practising our floating and diving under the water to collect sunken objects.

At sharing time on Monday morning April showed the class her paper plate dragon that she had created at home. This inspired other students to want to make their own. April then became the teacher at the craft table and was taking the students through a step by step process of construction. It was great to see her thrive in this experience and it was amazing to see the respect shown by the students towards her.

During investigation time on Tuesday to fit in with our strand maths of measurement. The students used pool noodles as a marble run. The students then marked off where their marble stopped. They were then comparing using the mathematical language of shorter or longer. It was great to see the amazing turn taking and encouragement shown by all the students.
For maths strand the students were looking at measurement. The students had to go around the classroom finding different objects they could measure. They had to choose if they were going to measure the length or width of each object using maths cubes. We then had fun measuring ourselves using the maths cubes.
On Wednesday, Rooms 5 and 14 did buddy reading together. It was wonderful to see the great tuakana/teina relationships forming. The children introduced themselves to each other and then enjoyed sharing each others books. Fantastic work everyone - it is wonderful to have friends of all ages at Tawa School.
On Thursday we had a Tennis session in the hall with coach Cam. The students focused on balance and control. This was to help us get used to the equipment in preparation for hitting the ball in the weeks to come.

Over the last two days of the week the students have made their own clocks with moveable hands. Firstly the students had to cut and paste the numbers into the correct order. Next they decorated their clocks using pastel and dye. Lastly they created hands to represent minutes and hours.
For art Friday the students created their very own colourful Kandinsky inspired tree.
On Friday it was Onesie day at Tawa school in support of Wellington Free Ambulance Service.  Thanks to everyone who participated in this fundraising event.

On Friday afternoon we had a visit from author and illustrator, Paul Beavis. He talked to us about how he became an author and illustrator, and showed us how to draw Mrs Mo's Monster.
